Phonics and Reading

In partnership with parents we encourage all children to learn to read as quickly as possible. We have a clear focus on the use of phonics and also understanding of the text - comprehension.

We use Letters and Sounds as a key strategy for early phonics development as well as additional resources that are recommended by our own highly trained Every Child a Reader Teacher.

The school uses a range of reading schemes throughout EYFS, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, including Oxford Reading Tree, Rigby Star, Bug Club, Big Cat and Project X to promote a love of reading and encourage children to select books that interest and engage them. All our reading books are banded at ability levels to ensure pupils are reading books that are appropriate to their level of ability. For children who are competent readers we provide an extensive range of novels and non-fiction texts by top children’s classic and modern authors including Roald Dahl, Michael Morpurgo, Eoin Colfer, David Almond, Nina Bawden, Anne Fine and CS Lewis.

Every classroom in the school has an attractive reading area where children can sit and enjoy reading from a range of books. We have regular visits from authors, poets and book illustrators to help promote reading.
